Purchase Burial Rights
Update on Cemetery Capacity.
We are close to reaching the burial capacity of the Baldwin Hill Conservation Cemetery and do not plan to expand at this time.
We will focus our mission on encouraging other cemeteries, land trusts and organizations to consider adopting green burial practices.
We will continue to provide information about Baldwin Hill and give tours to interested individuals and groups.
To purchase a burial right, please contact Baldwin Hill directly by:

How Burial Rights Work.
Baldwin Hill Conservation Cemetery does not sell specific plot locations but rather burial rights (also referred to as interment rights). Purchase of a burial right guarantees you an interment plot somewhere within the 1.5-acre white pine stand containing the universally accessible trail (see map).
Owners of interment rights acquire no rights in the ownership of real estate in the Cemetery.
The specific location of your burial is determined by cemetery operations managers just prior to interment. This maximizes the usefulness of the space and maintains equipment travel corridors needed for burial. Our goal is to work with and around the trees to minimize impacts to them during burials, and this is much easier when specific plot locations are not reserved in advance.
Please Plan Ahead.
The nature of the burial at Baldwin Hill Cemetery relies on planning in order to be successful and stress free for all involved (allowing more space for grieving and celebration of life). We suggest reading our step-by-step guide to planning a burial before purchasing your interment rights.
Costs.
We offer two types of interment rights at the cemetery:
Full body burial: $1,200
Cremains burial: $500
KLT members and Fayette residents receive a discount:
Full body burial: $1,000
Cremains burial: $420
Note: Purchase of an interment right is solely a purchase of the right to be buried; it does not include funeral, graveside, or burial services. It also does not include memorial stones or plantings, caskets, or any other products associated with a funeral or burial. Please see Other Costs for a list of such items.
See Cremation for our thoughts on whether to purchase body burial or cremation burial rights.
Plot Sizes.
Full body burial plots are 4’ x 10’. A full body plot will accommodate burial for one person.
Cremation burial plots are 3’ x 3’. A cremation burial plot will accommodate one persons cremains.
There may exist natural objects such as trees, tree roots, or stones within either type of plot. The plot sizes do not indicate the size of the grave itself, which is typically closer to 3’ by 8’ for full body burial. Given the density of burial at Baldwin Hill Cemetery, plot sizes are in many ways arbitrary. For practical purposes, they determine where plantings and memorials stones are allowed to be placed.
Family Plots.
Recognizing that family members may desire to be interred in proximity to one another, family plots consisting of two adjacent interment plots may be requested. The location of these plots will not be chosen until the time of death of one of the owners of interment rights. Requests for up to four adjacent plots can be made, but such requests will be accommodated only when the cemetery operations managers consider them to be logistically feasible. Two adjacent plots can be guaranteed. There are many obstacles (namely trees) in the cemetery, and reserving groupings of many plots poses logistical challenges, but we will do our best to accommodate.
